Rare Maserati Quattroporte Bellagio Fastback Up for Sale

Back in 2008, Italy’s revived Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera presented a station-wagon version of the Maserati Quattroporte with a fastback-like silhouette called the Bellagio. The stylish Italian family hauler was more than just a pure design exercise as Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera actually produced the car, albeit upon customer request.

We’re not sure how many Maserati Bellagio Fastbacks have been built, but it’s safe to assume that it’s an extremely rare car. That said, we were quite surprised to find one up for grabs in the used car market, and more specifically, by a Dutch dealer.

The blue-colored Bellagio Fastback was built to order in 2008 and according to the seller, has a mere 1,546 km or 961 miles on the odometer. The asking price is €165,000, equal to about $233,300. Photo gallery follows after the jump.

Geneva Preshow: Maserati's Go-Faster GrandCabrio Sport

It's been a year-and-a-half since Maserati lifted the wraps off a drop-top version of its GranTurismo coupe at the Frankfurt Motor Show in late 2009, and now the Italians are getting ready to expand the range of the GranCabrio with the presentation of a sportier variant at the upcoming Geneva Auto Show.

The new GranCabrio Sport follows in the footsteps of its hardtop sibling offering an improved chassis, more horse power and optimized gearshift response. The convertible is motivated by a more potent and fuel-efficient version of the firm's all-alloy 4.7-litre naturally-aspirated V8 churning out 450HP and 510 Nm or 376.2 lb-ft of peak torque, an increase of 10HP and 20Nm respectively over the standard GranCabrio. The top speed of the GranCabrio Sport is 285km/h or 177mph.

The company said the engine benefits from what it describes as "Maserati’s Friction Reduction Program", without providing any specific details, but claims a 6% reduction in fuel consumption.

The V8 is coupled to an upgraded ZF six-speed automatic transmission equipped with the MC Auto Shift software from the Quattroporte Sport GT S, which promises faster shift times. Maserati's engineers also revised the car's Skyhook active-suspension system and added grooved and drilled dual-cast brake discs.

On the outside, the GranCabrio Sport receives some mild tweaks in the form of a black grille, smoked headlamps with white sidemarks, new front corner splitters and redesigned side skirts. There's also a new shade of red called Rosso Trionfale, said to have been inspired by the red Italian national colors used on 1950s racing Maseratis.

Sales of the GranCabrio Sport will start from summer 2011.

In today's world of motorsports, much to the delight of fans, it's the norm to have one or more cameras fitted in the car or even in the driver's helmet. But that wasn't the case back in the 1950's, so we were quite surprised to discover such a video featuring the five-time Formula 1 World Champion and one of the greatest pilots of all time, Juan Manuel Fangio. A moment of coolness follows in the film after the break, with Fangio driving the Maserati 250F racecar at the Modena Aero-Autodrome.

Female car-fashionistas rejoice; Maserati has joined forces with Momaboma, an Italian firm that creates unique handbags and accessories exclusively out of vintage materials, such as old newspapers, magazines and clothes, to introduce a new limited edition handbag. What's so special about this 'femme-fatale' bag is that it is made of old brochures recovered from the Maserati archives. Produced in a limited edition of 150 copies, the hand-made Momaboma eco-bag goes on sale today with a retail price of £130 or nearly $190.

Maserati GranTurismo S Automatic to Debut in Geneva

Keeping its promise to introduce a new model at each international car show, Maserati has just announced that the GranTurismo S Automatic will make its world premiere at next month's Geneva Motor Show. The latest addition in the GranTurismo's range combines a 6-speed automatic transmission with the most powerful version of the firm's V8 engine that produces a hefty 440-horsepower at 7000rpm and 490Nm of torque at 4,750rpm from a capacity of 4.7-liters.

Furthermore, the Maserati GranTurismo S Automatic inherits some 'sporty' elements of the Quattroporte Sport GT S, such as the elimination of the kick-down in Manual mode.

Other than that, the GranTurismo S Automatic features the same stylistic differences as the manual gearbox model like the new under-door mini-skirts featuring a prominent shape and the new 20-inch wheel rims.

The majestic new Pininfarina-designed Maserati Quattroporte is a curvaceous yet aggressive-looking, big, five-metre long saloon that hails the rebirth of the “Italian flagship car”. The Quattroporte is the ultimate embodiment of qualities for which Italy is renowned throughout the world: an appreciation of beauty and good living, elegance, sophisticated engineering, genuinely sporty temperament and alluring exclusivity. The purity of the technical solutions adopted for the Quattroporte, the lack of any fussy details or complications, the sensuality of a line created by the world's most celebrated stylist, and a sophisticated bespoke leather and wood interior personalised to suit each individual owner, all combine to make the new Quattroporte absolutely irresistible. In a confirmed enthusiast, just the sight of the Quattroporte can make the heart race, perspiration bead, and muscles quiver with anticipation. With the keys to the ignition in hand, the effect is quadrupled. Emblazoned with a dominant trident badge in the center of the massive grille, the Quattroporte's appearance and pedigree intoxicate, casting a spell even before the big V8 engine under the hood roars to life. Designed for high level road use, it can exceed 330 km/h at full throttle, sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. Although easy and pleasant to drive on the road, the MC12 is also a brilliantly dynamic car. It handles very sweetly and fluidly yet the driver can still feel all the power of a genuinely sporty thoroughbred under the surface. The new model adds the definitive flourish to Maserati's return to the racing circuits after the recent and highly successful debut in the Daytona 24 Hour Race, of the Trofeo Light, inspired by the equally impressive single-series protagonist. Under the guidance of engineer Giorgio Ascanelli, Maserati?s Racing Division is currently developing the new car to meet the rules of the major international championships.

The result is that 37 long years after its last victory in an international championship (1967, Cooper Maserati F1, South African Grand Prix), the Trident is returning to the track. The Maserati MC12 is a two-seater long-tail coupe-spider with a long wheel base (2800 mm). It has a typical racing/sporty set-up with a removable hard top. It is also powered by an impressive 630 hp six-litre mid-rear V12 engine and boasts 41%-front and 59%-rear weight distribution. Highly advanced composites and alloys have enhanced its structural rigidity and kept its overall weight down. The MC12?s bodywork is entirely carbon fibre, while its stress-bearing chassis is made from a carbon fibre and Nomex honeycomb sandwich. Two aluminium sub-chassis support the ancillaries, help absorb bumps, and guarantee an excellent standard of safety.

The MC12 benefits from all of the Ferrari Maserati Group?s most advanced technologies and competition experience. It boasts a powerful naturally aspirated 12-cylinder 65° V engine that displaces 5998 cc and punches out 465 kW at 7500 rpm. Designed to meet the specific needs and characteristics of a road-going Maserati, it also offers absolutely excellent drivability. The MC12 delivers a maximum torque of 652 Nm at 5500 rpm and remains exceptionally nimble and fluid, even at low engine speeds. It has an aluminium crankcase, titanium con rods, and extremely aerodynamically efficient four-valve cylinder heads to boot. Distribution is by way of four overhead camshafts per cylinder which are gear-driven, a solution that offers perfect timing control. The dry sump lubrication also boasts a highly efficient scavenger pump.

The MC12 has independent wishbone suspension front and rear with anti-dive and anti-squat geometries and push-rod suspension. This set-up offers very progressive suspension response for exceptional handling precision under all conditions. The front of the car can be raised for parking ramps and the 19? wheels are attached via a single centre locking wheel nut. It also boasts Pirelli tyres: 245/35 (front) and 345/35 (rear). The cabin boasts an easily removable top, which instantly converts the MC12 from a coupe to a spider. The cabin itself is the epitome of elegance and sportiness. It is simple and understated, typical of an extreme car yet also displaying the meticulous care and finish that have become a classic Trident signature. There is exceptional harmony between the high tech-effect carbon features, the perforated leather trim and the stunning yet high-grip tough technical fabric too.

The upper part of the leather and carbon-trimmed steering wheel is slightly flattened. The dashboard, with its clean tailored lines, is characteristically Maserati. The instruments are organised around a central and prominent speedometer, placed directly in front of the driver. The center console includes the controls for the climate control system, and two of its four vents. Set at the intersection of the console and the central tunnel is the characteristic oval clock, and the blue engine Start button. Other controls are laid out on the titanium-coloured stylised central tunnel which also includes a storage compartment and a 12 volt outlet.

Maserati GranTurismo

In fact, the new GranTurismo is not quite as much of a tool for hard-driving as the car it replaces, especially the rorty GranSport, Maserati having configured this bigger, heavier coupe as more of a luxuriant long-distance mile-masher. But though it's slower than the outgoing car - the penalty for that extra weight and a 405bhp engine that has barely been altered - do not go away with the impression that this car falls short. The new car provides slightly more room, front and rear, though the boot, as with the old model, certainly isn't going to house the luggage of four holidaying occupants unless they stick with their favourite jeans. They'll find luxuriant compensation in the GranTuismo's cabin, which is even more richly furnished than the old car's, and in another league compared to its rivals bar the Aston.

Maserati's tradition of the Gran Turismo concept dates back to 1947 when the Trident Company, following its clients' demand, unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show its first Gran Turismo, the A6, designed by the great Pinin Farina. It was the first Maserati road car and was produced in 58 units. The GranTurismo is a close relative of Maserati's Quattroporte saloon, sharing its mechanicals and understructure, the key difference being a 125mm shorter wheeebase, and a shorter rear overhang. Which is why this car is noticeably bigger than the outgoing Coupe, and why it weighs more than it should. But it also means that it promises engaging road manners, this being one of the Quattroporte's finer features, besides a potent and civilised powertrain.

The new coupe is powered by a 4.2 liter V8 engine, delivering 405 HP, and a weight distribution of 49% at the front and 51% at the rear. Having never successfully fought the 911, Maserati is abandoning that cutthroat market for greener ($) pastures now being grazed by the BMW 6 Series, Jag XKR, Mercedes CL-Class, and a few Bentley Continental GTs and Aston DB9s. Buyers in that crowd don't cotton to do-it-yourself shifting, nor do they adore a bone-crushing ride. They also demand a reasonable rear seat, and the GranTurismo's now seems competitive with the bigs in the class-Mercedes CL, Conti GT , and even Ferrari 's 612 Scaglietti , though proper comparative SAE dimensions aren't available. Mechanically, the car is a Quattroporte automatic with 4.8 inches sawed out of the wheelbase and 2.6 inches off the tail. The drivetrain and "Skyhook" adaptive suspension are tailored to the GranTurismo's sportier mission. Press the dash button marked "Sport" and throttle responsiveness increases 20 percent, the dampers stiffen to curtail body roll and float, and the transmission shift logic becomes more aggressive.

With 51 percent of its weight on the rear axle (even more with people onboard), a limited-slip differential, providing 25-percent lockup under power and 45-percent on overrun, and Pirelli PZero Rosso tires that are wider in back (285/40-19s versus 245/40-19s in front), the car is setup for neutral to understeering behavior, and it's nearly impossible to kick the tail out in the dry, even with the stability control switched off.
